Adhering to de facto standards promotes usability and eases the learning curve. Corporations often impose their own standards with the use of style guides. In the intranet work I have performed, I have developed solutions that allow corporations to maintain their own identities while preserving the usability of a well-designed site.

Example:
A corporate style guide was recently imposed on all new departmental web sites, but my client was torn between wanting a unique look and feel for his department's site and adhering to the corporate edict. We did both by using different hues of the pre-defined colors, creating a department logo, and laying out internal pages in a more interesting fashion. Now my client's site is being hailed as a best practice within his company and others are modeling their sites after his.
